How to Set Up Apple Pay

iOS 16 brings a number of great features to the iPhone and iPad, including the ability to use Apple Pay to make contactless payments. If you’re new to Apple Pay, or just need a refresher on how to set it up, here’s everything you need to know.

 

Open the Wallet app and tap the plus sign.

If you’re asked to add a card that you already use with Apple Pay, just enter the card’s security code.

Tap Next, then follow the steps on your screen until you’re asked to add your billing, shipping, and contact information.

If you have an iPhone that supports Apple Pay and you’re running iOS 16 or later, you can now add multiple cards to the Wallet app and use those cards with Apple Pay. Here’s how to set it up.

1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
2. Tap the + button in the upper-right corner.
3. Follow the prompts to add a new card. You can use your iPhone’s camera to scan your card information or enter it manually.
4. Once your card is added, tap Done in the upper-right corner of the screen.
5. Your new card will now appear in the Wallet app and can be used with Apple Pay.

If you’re asked to add the card that you use with your Apple ID, cards on other devices, or cards that you’ve recently removed, choose them, then enter the card security codes.

Checking out is easy and secure when you use Apple Pay. To pay in stores with your iPhone or iPad, look for the Apple Pay mark or an Accepted Payments sign. If you have an iPhone 8 or later, double-click the Side button to confirm a payment after resting your finger on Touch ID. With Face ID on iPhone X or later, triple-click the Side button then confirm with a glance. And on iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) or later or iPad Pro 11-inch, make payments by double-clicking the Side Button while holding your iPad near the contactless reader. With earlier models of iPhone and iPad, hold your device near the reader without resting your finger on Touch ID/Face ID; wait until Done and a tick mark appear, then lift your finger.*

 

 

How to Check Out in Stores

You can now use Apple Pay to make purchases in stores with your iPhone. With Wallet, you can keep your credit, debit, and prepaid cards in one place. You can also use Wallet to get passes like your boarding pass, movie ticket, or coupons. Here’s how to use Wallet and Apple Pay.

When you find a store that accepts Apple Pay, look for one of these symbols at the register:

Next, double-click the side button on your iPhone. This will bring up your default card. If you want to use a different card, tap the one that you want to use.

Then, hold your iPhone near the contactless reader until you see Done and a checkmark on the screen. You might need to sign a receipt or enter your PIN, depending on the store’s policy.

If you’re asked to enter a PIN, hold the top of your iPhone near the reader again. On some older models of iPhone, double-click the Home button while holding your iPhone near the reader. In stores that accept Apple Pay, you can also use Touch ID or Face ID.

To pay with Apple Pay in apps and on websites in Safari on all devices, you must be signed in to iCloud and have two-factor authentication turned on for your Apple ID. On an iPhone with Face ID, double-click the Side button, then look at your iPhone to authenticate.

 

Wait for Done and a tick mark to appear.

After you’ve placed your iPhone near the contactless reader with your thumb on Touch ID, you’ll see Done and a checkmark on the display. If you don’t see Done, try moving your iPhone a little closer to the reader.

If you paid with Apple Pay and your default card is a credit or debit card, you might need to enter your PIN or sign a receipt.

If asked, hold your iPhone close to the reader until it vibrates or beeps, or until Done and a checkmark appear on the display. Depending on the store, you might need to sign a receipt or enter your PIN.

 

How to Check Out in Apps

With Apple Pay and Wallet, you can use your iPhone to pay in stores, in apps, and on websites. When you pay with your credit or debit card, you might need to enter your card security code or billing ZIP code. With Apple Pay, you can useFace ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to confirm the payment.

If you see Apple Pay as a payment method, you can use it to pay with a credit or debit card that’s already saved in your Apple Wallet.1 To pay with Apple Pay in apps, you might need to confirm that you have a passcode set up.2

Before you can use Apple Pay in apps, you need to set up Apple Pay.
On your device, open the Settings app, then tap “Wallet & Apple Pay.”
Follow the instructions on your screen to add a credit or debit card. If asked, enter the card security code.

 

Choose Apple Pay at the checkout.

When you’re ready to checkout, look for the Apple Pay or Wallet logo at the checkout counter. If you don’t see it, ask the cashier if they accept Apple Pay.

To pay, hold your iPhone near the contactless reader with your finger on Touch ID. You might need to sign a receipt or enter your PIN.

If you’re using a supported card in Wallet and see , , or on the reader, you can use your device to pay by holding it near the reader without waking or unlocking it. Look for one of these symbols on terminals and point-of-sale systems.

If asked, hold your iPhone within an inch or so of the contactless reader until you see Done and a checkmark on the display. You might need to enter your PIN, depending on your bank or card issuer’s policies.

 

Wait for Done and a tick mark to appear.

When you finish shopping in an app that uses Apple Pay, you’ll see a summary of your purchase. To confirm your payment, double-click the Side Button or Home Button on your iPhone. You might need to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.

Once you’ve confirmed your payment, wait for Done and a tick mark to appear. If you see an error message instead, try entering your billing, shipping, and contact information again.
